Your Whirley Pop: care and use

If you’ve already got a Whirley Pop in your kitchen, this information should help you get the most out of it and pop the most delicious popcorn for years to come!

Let’s start at the beginning… your Whirley Pop is either an aluminum or stainless steel pot with either nylon or metal gears. Remember, if you have an induction type stove, you’ll need the Stainless Steel Whirley Pop. For all other stove types, the aluminum or stainless steel will work great.

Whirley Pop lid and gear mechanismThere is a 25-year warranty on the mechanical parts of the lid provided by the manufacturer, Wabash Valley Farms. Should anything on the lid break, chances are it will be covered by the warranty.

It’s strongly recommended that you register the purchase of your Whirley Pop. Just go to this link and enter your information. There is an option to receive a Popcorn Party Set during registration, and this will require you pay the shipping fees. For Canadians the shipping from the U.S. is a little pricey, but it’s not mandatory to opt in for the Popcorn Party Set in order to register your Whirley Pop.

Okay, back to the fun stuff…

 

Cleaning and Seasoning your Whirley Pop

 

Before using your Whirley Pop for first time, spend a few minutes preparing it for a lifetime of use. Pop the lid off and wash all surfaces in warm, soapy water and rinse. Give it all a towel dry and put the lid back on.

When taking the lid off, this is how I do it:

  1. Pull up the big tab at the front of the lid.
  2. Once it’s released, the handle-side clip should easily release from the pot.

When putting the lid back on, this is how I do it:

  1. Put the handle-side clip on first.
  2. Then push down on the opposite side to snap the lid into place.
  3. Then, while holding the pot, give the lid a slight counter-clockwise turn so that the clip on the right-hand side holds the right-side flap firmly in place. Try it a couple of times and you’ll get the knack!

 

Seasoning your Whirley Pop

 

Once your Whirley Pop is nice and clean, it’s ready to be seasoned. Seasoning your Whirley Pop is easy and doesn’t have to be done very often at all. When you season your Whirley Pop, you a creating non-stick coating of oil in the bottom of the pot which will prevent popcorn from sticking and make cleanup much easier.

Here’s how you do it:

  1. Put a tablespoon of vegetable (corn, canola, etc., but not olive) oil in the pot.
  2. Put the Whirley Pop on the stove and turn the heat up to 70% of maximum.
  3. Once the oil starts to heat up, tilt and roll the Whirley Pop around to evenly distribute the oil across the entire bottom surface of the pot.
  4. Once the oil is nice and hot, turn off the element and remove the Whirley Pop. Set it aside to cool down on its own – 15 – 30 minutes.
  5. After it’s cool, use a paper towel to wipe out the excess oil. Your Whirley Pop is now seasoned!

 

Popping Popcorn

 

When you’re ready make some popcorn, start by getting really, really hungry! Then, warm up the Whirley Pop on your stove. You don’t need the heat to be very high – my recommendation is 70-75% of maximum. Give it a couple of minutes to really heat up and then put in your oil, kernels, and optionally, seasoning salt.

Because you’ve seasoned your Whirley Pop, the oil you use is pretty much all about adding flavour. If you want that great movie theatre taste, the best oil to use is our Real Theatre Popping Oil. It’s refined coconut oil, beta carotene for colouring, and butter flavourings. You can put as little as a teaspoon, or as much as a couple of tablespoons.

If you’d prefer a lighter taste, you can use as little as a teaspoon of any high temperature oil. Recommended oils are our Classic Blend Popping Oil (a blend of coconut and canola oils), peanut, corn, canola, or even Green Tea oil. Not recommended is butter or olive oil. These will smoke and burn even at medium temperatures, and you will be disappointed.

After your oil goes in, add ½ cup of kernels.

So, ½ cup is perfect for most kernels, especially if they’re on the bigger side, (Big & Yellow, Extra Large Mushroom, etc.). If you’re popping really small kernels (Baby White, Lady Finger, etc.) you can use a little more than ½ cup.

If you’re making Movie Theatre Popcorn, or using glazes, you’re going to want to add those extra ingredients before your kernels start popping. (Read these blog articles on making movie theatre popcorn and kettle corn.) Once everything is inside the Whirley Pop, close the lid and start turning the handle at a nice easy pace.

You might not hear anything happening for a minute or two, but be assured that pretty soon you’ll hear popping and that there’s a popcorn storm going on inside your Whirley Pop!

Have your bowl ready, and when the popping really starts to die off, turn off your heat and immediately remove the Whirley Pop from the element. Don’t hesitate! Turn the Whirley Pop over and pour all that popcorn into your bowl. As the popcorn chef, you’re entitled to try some hot popcorn before anyone else does. That’s a law.

 

Easy Cleanup

 

After popping a batch of popcorn, and your Whirley Pop has completely cooled down, it can be easily wiped clean with a paper towel and put away until you’re hankerin’ again.

If you popped with sugar or glazes, you will want to give it some extra attention by removing the lid and letting it soak in some soapy water for a few minutes before rinsing and drying. You may want to re-season the pot again as well.

That’s pretty much all there is to it!

 

Don’t ever:

 

  • Put your Whirley Pop in the dishwasher
  • Leave an empty popper on a heated element (aluminum can warp or melt!)
  • Use butter, vegetable spray, or olive oil
  • Use cheese or dairy in the pot
  • Force the crank when the pot is full
  • Shake the pot across your element (it can scratch glass-top stoves!)
  • User oven cleaner to clean
  • Put in the microwave
  • Let unsupervised children use the Whirley Pop
